Defeat for Crystal Palace on the final day of the League 1 regular season at Oxford United couldn’t stop the party as they bounced back to the Championship at the first time of asking, finishing eight points clear of Doncaster Rovers who’ll join them in the English second-tier next season.
Bournemouth, Barnsley, Rotherham, and Brentford will take part in the Playoffs while Scunthorpe, Bradford, Carlisle, and Walsall all take the tumble down to League 2 for the 2015/16 campaign.
Southend United missed out in the playoffs last season, but have won League 2 by six points from Port Vale and a further point clear of Exeter City who’ll all be playing third-tier football next season.
Exeter and Chesterfield met in Yorkshire with the hosts winning 21, but they couldn’t overcome the four-goal difference they needed to pip Exeter to the third automatic spot. Chesterfield, relegated from League 1 last season, will be joined in the playoffs by Oldham (who also came down last season), and Rochdale and Gillingham.
Mansfield Town drop back to the Conference Premier after two years back in the Football League, finishing four points adrift.
For the first time in the competition’s history, the second relegation spot will be decided by a Playoff at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate on Tuesday after Northampton Town and Plymouth Argyle finished level on points, goal difference, and goals scored. Plymouth won 3-2 at Northampton before a 1-1 draw in Devon but the competition rules don’t take head-to-heads into account.
