Barnsley have won promotion back to the FL Championship after two seasons in the English third-tier, beating Bournemouth on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley this weekend. Michael Richardson headed Bournemouth in front after quarter of an hour, before Thomas Carroll levelled for Barnsley with 20 minutes to play.
Luke Steele was the hero in the shootout for Barnsley, who finished fourth behind Bournemouth in the table, as he saved spot kicks from Michael Richardson and Shaun Macdonald. Barnsley did the double over Bournemouth in the league, but this win will be the most important.
The League 2 Playoff Final took place the previous day, and was settled by a sole Ashley Miller goal for Gillingham as they beat Oldham Athletic. Gillingham finished 7th in the regular season, three points Oldham in fifth. They drew 0-0 in Lancashire before Oldham won 1-0 at Priestfield in January.
Danny Jackman was sent-off shortly for Gillingham after Miller’s goal as he collected a second booking to accompany the first picked-up just two and a half minutes in.
