The Bundesliga Review: Final Day Drama

On the final day of 1.Bundesliga, goals were hard to come by in the first-half, until a flurry of activity in the final forty-five minutes of the season. Ultimately, nothing changed from the beginning of the day as only Stuttgart and Gladbach changed places, with Schalke sealing the final Champions League spot and Augsburg unable to avoid the drop.

The champions rounded-off their campaign with a 3-1 win at Hoffenheim, while game of the day was in Mainz as Hamburg sealed second-place in a seven goal thriller courtesy of a Son Heung-Min hat-trick.

Hannover bowed out of the league with a goalless draw at Freiburg who will take the third Europa League place as DFB-Pokal finalists Schalke and Dortmund both will play Champions League football next season alongside Hamburg and third-place Leverkusen.

Augsburg won an admirable point at home to Leverkusen, but despite Hertha losing at home to Nürnberg they drop back to 2.Bundesliga after a single season in the top-flight as they would have needed another two goals today to finish 17th. Hertha’s Playoff opponents will be Cottbus after they were held at Ingolstadt and slipped to third.

Elsewhere, Sebastian Rode was sent-off in the final minute for Frankfurt who then conceded an injury time winner at home to Stuttgart; Düsseldorf and Wolfsburg shared four goals and the points; Bayern beat Gladbach at home with two second-half goals, and Schalke beat Werder Bremen.

Dortmund’s title win earns them £27m from DFL.
