Argentina dominated today’s Group E clash against France, but the Copa America and Confederations Cup holders were unable to break down the French defence as the Moscow crowd were treated to the first goalless match of this summer’s World Cup.
Argentina had two-thirds possession and a staggering 20 shots to France’s three, but Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane was a rock at the back for the French and, when he was beaten, Steve Mandanda between the posts was equal to everything sent his way.
Lionel Messi grazed the outside of the post around the hour mark, but France never looked like being breached yet neither did they look like having any chances of note in the final third.
0-0, and with the USA winning earlier today, Argentina will be desperate for a win against them on Saturday. France play Egypt.
