Cristiano Ronaldo: Europe’s Best Player

Cristiano Ronaldo has received the Best Player in Europe Award from UEFA at a ceremony in Nyon today, after his 24 goals and 8 assists in 44 games helped Real Madrid to a domestic treble and fourth-straight La Liga title.

Second place went to Sergio Agüero of Manchester City who scored 25 times and made 13 assists in his 54 appearances this season including a hat-trick in the Europa League Final. Domestically, they were beaten to the Premier League title on goal difference by Manchester United, but lifted the FA Cup after Agüero’s opener against WBA.

Wayne Rooney polled third after he scored 22 times in 55 games for Manchester United and England over the past season, also making 11 assists. United retained the Premier League this season, and reached the Champions League final four.


Borussia Dortmund have announced that teenage striker Quirin Riemann has signed his first professional contract after he turned 17 on Thursday. Riemann has committed to the club until the summer of 2018, and will likely be sent out on loan next season.


In other news, French clubs Arles-Avignon, Evian, and RC Lens have all appointed new managers, hiring Peter Maes, Eric Hély, and Laurent Guyot respectively. Lastly, Belgian top-flight side Westerlo have appointed Harry van den Ham as their new man in charge.

PFA / FWAs: Hazard, Rooney, and Ramsey

Human potato Wayne Rooney has been named as PFA Player of the Year for the third time as the England forward captained Manchester United to retaining the Premier League title, scoring 31 goals for club and country along the way.

The 29 year-old is the leading goalscorer for England, and he broke Jack Charlton’s previous record of 49 with his 50th goal against Luxembourg, before completing a hat-trick in the Euro 2016 Qualifier back in October.

It’s the third successive season that a Manchester Unietd player has won the award (7 in the last 9), with Yohan Cabaye collecting the honour last year after Rooney won it back in 2013 (and previously in 2010).


Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey won the PFA Young Player Award in a season which saw him lift the Capitol One Cup. The 24 year-old narrowly pipped Manchester City’s Neymar and Ezequiel Cirgliano of Swansea to the award. The Welsh international scored eight times for Arsenal in the Premier League, creating 11 assists.


Eden Hazard collected the FWA Footballer of the Year Award for the second season in a row, with the Chelsea midfielder in fine form this season, scoring 21 in all competitions for Chelsea as well as finding the back of the net three times in seven games for Belgium.
